Welcome to Wharncliffe, Tasmania’s longest-established specialist breeder of black huacaya alpacas.

At Wharncliffe our vision is to breed black alpacas with advanced fleeces. The commercially important qualities of fineness and density are often missing from black fleeces but they do have beautiful lustre and are very soft to handle. We need to develop and combine all these characteristics. Breeding decisions are aimed at constantly improving the quality of our fleeces, building on frames of correct conformation. Our daily mission is to manage a herd of happy healthy alpacas in an “organic friendly” manner.

We hope to share our enthusiasm for black alpacas with those who would like to enter the industry or add some of our beautiful blacks to their herd.

Wharncliffe is owned by Henk and Alison Brolsma. Henk is the toe-nail trimmer and fence-builder and holds the fort so Alison can go alpaca-ing. Alison’s background of physiotherapy and small-business ownership have translated usefully to running an alpaca business.

We encountered alpacas for the first time at the Huon Show in 1994 and have become increasingly absorbed by them. They have fitted well into our busy family life, being relatively low maintenance and undemanding, as long as one is happy to hang over the fence at length, observing them - and calling it ‘work’.

Wharncliffe participates at Australian Alpaca Association  (AAA) events in Tasmania and occasionally at interstate shows. Alison is utterly committed to the AAA, having volunteered in many roles on the Regional Committee.
